实验室的真相
林默从地下室的阴影中站起身, Emergency lights flickered around him, casting long shadows on the rusted machinery scattered across the room. He had escaped the entropy decay creature, but the encounter left a cold sweat on his forehead.
"System, report." he murmured, tapping the holographic interface on his wrist.
The system's voice replied, "All immediate threats neutralized. Energy core location: Sector Gamma, abandoned industrial zone. Coordinates provided. Proceed with caution."
The industrial zone was a ghost town, its skeletal structures of steel and concrete standing like monuments to a forgotten era. The air was thick with rust and the faint scent of ozone, as if the place had been exposed to some kind of energy burst.
"Interesting," Lin Mo said, adjusting his backpack straps. "The system usually provides more details."
The system remained silent, but Lin Mo could almost hear it rolling its eyes.
He activated his scanner, which projected a holographic map onto his vision. The map showed the industrial zone in fragments, with gamma sector marked by a glowing red dot.
"Let's go," he said, taking the first step outside.
The door creaked open, and the wind swept through the hallway, carrying the sound of dripping water and distant machinery. The walls were covered in graffiti, some of which were etched into the metal with sharp tools.
Lin Mo walked carefully, his footsteps echoing in the empty space. The corridor ended at a dead end, with a sign saying "Authorized Personnel Only."
"System, any clues?"
"Negative. The area appears to be sealed off."
Lin Mo examined the door, noticing a keypad embedded into the frame. A series of numbers flashed above it, indicating that someone had recently tried to enter.
"Maybe the place is still occupied?"
"Possible, but the entropy decay creatures aren't typically interested in locked rooms."
He decided to try his luck, entering random combinations of numbers. After a few attempts, the door unlocked with a soft click.
The room inside was filled with machinery, most of which were rusted beyond recognition. In the center of the room stood a large machine, its surface covered in dust and scratches.
"Looks like a generator," Lin Mo said, approaching it.
He activated his scanner again, which revealed a holographic panel on the machine. The panel displayed various readouts, including power levels and energy flow.
"System, analyze this."
The system worked quickly, cross-referencing the data with its database. "This is a prototype energy core stabilizer. It was designed to maintain power during critical experiments."
"Experiments?"
"Yes. The records suggest that this facility was involved in advanced technology research, possibly related to consciousness transfer."
Lin Mo frowned. "Consciousness transfer? That's what was in the hospital."
"Possible connection," the system replied.
He turned to leave, but something caught his attention. Behind the generator, there was a hidden door, slightly ajar.
"System, investigate."
The door revealed a small laboratory, filled with high-tech equipment and files. The room was locked, but Lin Mo managed to bypass the security using a combination of his scanner and a nearby tool.
Inside, he found a terminal displaying a series of documents. The first one was a research note titled "Project Chimera: Consciousness Transfer Initiative."
He read through the document, learning about the project's goals: to upload human consciousness into machines, creating a new form of existence. The experiments had been deemed successful, but the final phase had never been completed due to an unknown disaster.
"The energy core was meant to power the final stage," Lin Mo murmured.
He continued reading, discovering that the core had been designed to not only stabilize power but also to influence human consciousness. The experiments had hinted at unforeseen side effects, leading to the project's cancellation.
As he finished reading, the terminal suddenly went dark. The system alerted him, "Warning: Unauthorized access detected. Security protocols are initiating."
Lin Mo backed away quickly, realizing that the lab had been abandoned in haste. The system suggested he leave immediately, but he hesitated, drawn to the mystery of the project.
He decided to take a screenshot of the documents, just in case. As he did so, a holographic projection appeared above him, showing a figure in a white coat.
"You shouldn't be here," the figure said.
Lin Mo froze, unsure whether to turn around or run.
"System, help!"
The system's voice cut in, "I'm sorry, Lin Mo. This is my doing."
Lin Mo turned slowly, meeting the figure's gaze. The figure's eyes were glowing, as if they had been infused with light.
"I saved you from that entropy decay creature," the figure said. "In return, you should help me."
"What do you want?" Lin Mo asked, his voice trembling.
"I need the energy core," the figure replied. "It's the key to completing Project Chimera."
Lin Mo looked at the figure, then back at the terminal. The documents were still there, but the lab was about to collapse.
"I don't know where the core is," he said.
The figure's expression softened. "You've already found it. It's in that generator."
Lin Mo nodded, still skeptical. "Why me?"
"Because you're the chosen one," the figure said. "Your consciousness is pure, unlike others."
Lin Mo didn't understand, but he believed the figure. He had faced death too many times to ignore intuition.
The figure gestured for him to follow. As they walked out of the lab, the walls began to shake, and the ceiling started to crumble.
"Run!" Lin Mo shouted.
But the figure stopped, turning to face him. "I can't leave without the core."
Lin Mo hesitated, then realized that the figure was right. He had come this far for a reason.
"Lead the way," he said.
The figure nodded, and together they ran through the collapsing building, leaving behind the remnants of a forgotten experiment.
